The Committee of the Regions is 15 years!

The 21st and 22nd of April took place the 79th Plenary Session of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) at the European Parliament with the presence of political members from all Europe. This Plenary Session coincided with the 15th birthday of the CoR. All the members tried to approach points of view concerning European challenges, specifically, around the economical crisis. The President of the CoR, Luc Van den Brande presented his declaration of intentions about the work done during these years as well as the next objectives of this institution.

From its birth in March 1994 under the framework of the Maastricht Treaty, the CoR has tried to integrate the interests and aspirations of all the regions of the community as well as to ponder the impact that policies from Brussels have in each one of them.

The declaration done by the President of the CoR for the 15th birthday of the institution assures that their actions are based on “the belief that cooperation between local, regional, national and European statements is essential to contribute to a harder Union between the European countries in order to answer the challenges of the globalisation”. It also says that the cultural and linguistic European diversity is its stronger asset to go into democracy in depth.

YOUNG TALENTS

Mr. Van den Brande highlighted the importance of the talent to contribute with solutions to the crisis, not only concerning the economical aspects, but also regarding the public and private managements. In occasion of the European year of the Innovation and the Creativity celebrated this 2009, the CoR organized on Monday and Tuesday 20 and 21 April a forum with a hundred of “young talents” from all over Europe – between 18 and 30 years old – and coming from different disciplines, from the art to the researching culture, passing by the science and the urban development, where 3 prices were given to the most talented people.
